There’s No Magic in a Monday

That “big day” you’re waiting for? It won’t change you.

In partnership with

Morning—Clay here.
We love to believe in the “big day.”
The Monday that changes everything.
That January 1st resets our whole life.
A retirement party unlocks a brand-new chapter.

I’ve believed it too. For years, I thought the milestone would flip the switch.
But here’s the hard truth: those days feel a lot like the day before.
Change doesn’t happen because of a date on the calendar.

🔥 Here’s what I mean. Let’s dive in.

There’s No Magic in a Monday

I was listening to a recent episode of the Rich Roll Podcast with Alexi Pappas, and she said something that stuck with me: real change happens much slower than we think. She was talking about society, but it applies to our personal lives too.

We like to imagine change will hit all at once…
On the day you join the gym.
On the day you retire.
On the day you wake up and decide: Today, I’m different.

But here’s the truth: those days feel a lot like the day before.

Think back on other “big days” you’ve already lived.
Your first day on the job didn’t instantly make you competent; you had to figure it out piece by piece.
Your wedding day didn’t instantly make you a great husband; you had to grow into that role.
The day your first child was born didn’t instantly make you a present father; you had to learn to show up daily, even when it was inconvenient or exhausting.

The milestone matters, but it doesn’t do the work for you.

Why We Think It Will

We get sold the idea of overnight transformation. Diet ads promise dramatic results in 30 days. Financial gurus talk about turning your money situation around in a weekend. Even social media celebrates “the big day” with before-and-after photos, viral announcements, and highlight reels.

So, of course, we start believing that if we just pick the right Monday, or the right January 1st, or the first morning of retirement, our life will instantly feel different.

But here’s what actually happens:
You wake up, and it feels like… Tuesday.
Or the day after New Year’s.
Or just another Saturday, only with fewer obligations.

The shift you were counting on doesn’t show up by itself. And that’s when discouragement sets in. “Maybe I don’t have what it takes. Maybe nothing’s ever going to change.”

But it’s not you that failed—it’s the expectation.

It’s a meme for a reason…

The Truth About Feeling Different

You don’t feel different until you do something different.

That means building new rhythms.
Trying new routines.
Choosing actions that align with who you want to become, not just who you’ve always been.

If you want retirement to feel like a new chapter instead of an endless string of aimless Saturdays, you have to write that chapter yourself. Create habits that give your days structure. Rebuild friendships. Explore something you’ve always wanted to try but never had the time for.

If you want health to feel different, you can’t just sign up for a gym membership. You have to go. And you won’t feel transformed on day one. You’ll feel transformed after dozens of small, consistent days add up.

If you want purpose to feel different, you can’t just declare it. You have to experiment, fail, adjust, and slowly build into something meaningful.

The decision is the spark. The work is the fire.

No Magic in a Monday

So if you’re waiting for the “big day” to make you feel different, stop waiting. Start doing. Because there’s no magic in a Monday, or in a retirement party, or a birthday, or a New Year’s resolution, or an anniversary, or a promotion, or a gym membership card, or even a wedding day.

The magic is in what you do after.

Where to Begin

Big change happens in small, ordinary steps. If you’re ready to move from decision to action, here are three places to start:

  • Pick one habit you’ve put off - walking after dinner, journaling, calling a friend, and do it today. Don’t wait for next Monday.

  • Choose one thing to subtract - skip the nightly scroll, the second drink, the extra hour of TV. Subtraction is often the fastest path to feeling lighter.

  • Write down one small challenge for the week ahead- and stick to it. It doesn’t have to be impressive. It just has to be real.

Don’t wait for the perfect day. Create a different one.
