The Oatmeal Principle: Why Boring Habits Build a Better Life

Big change doesn’t come from big moments—it comes from small, quiet wins. Here’s how to start.

In partnership with

Morning—Clay here.
At Campfire Gentleman, we keep the focus on what matters most: showing up for your family, living with purpose, growing daily, protecting your health, and cutting the clutter

I’ve spent a lot of time talking about how we change our direction. This week, I want to shift the focus to how we keep moving forward once we do.

Because the truth is—real change doesn’t usually come from the big, dramatic moments.
It comes from the small, boring ones

Let’s dig in.

The Power of Boring

I’ve always had this goofy idea that if I ever became a coach—life coach, fitness coach, whatever—the first thing I’d tell someone to do wouldn’t be some mindset hack or productivity trick.

It’d be oatmeal.

Not the trendy protein-packed, collagen-boosted, TikTok-friendly kind.
Just regular oatmeal. Some cinnamon. Maybe a few blueberries. Half a banana if you’re feeling wild.

Why?

Because oatmeal is boring. 🥱
And the truth is, most meaningful change is boring too.

It’s not the sexy stuff that makes the difference.
It’s the stuff nobody claps for. The small, simple actions you do on repeat, long enough for them to actually matter

✅ Going to the gym 3–4 times a week—every week
✅ Eating the same salad at lunch over and over again
✅ Asking your wife what she’s grateful for—every night, even when the day’s been a mess
✅ Texting that buddy every Wednesday, even though he never texts first

I know, oatmeal makes exactly no one smile this big.

It’s the kind of stuff nobody notices.
The people closest to you might not say anything—because real change moves too slow to see day to day.

But then your cousin at the family reunion says,
“Dang, man—you’ve lost weight.”

Or your doctor looks up from your chart and says,
“Whatever you’re doing… keep it up.”

Even the quick changes—the ones that come from a burst of motivation or a wake-up call—don’t last unless they turn into boring routines.

Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.

James Clear

That’s the real secret.
Not just starting strong.
But continuing simply.

🔥 And yeah—sometimes it starts with a boring bowl of oatmeal.

(And no, this isn’t nutrition advice. I know oatmeal is now considered toxic by at least three YouTube doctors. This is process advice: boring, consistent effort beats intensity every time.)

Take the bite out of rising vet costs with pet insurance

Veterinarians across the country have reported pressure from corporate managers to prioritize profit. This incentivized higher patient turnover, increased testing, and upselling services. Pet insurance could help you offset some of these rising costs, with some providing up to 90% reimbursement.
